As I have mentioned in another thread, I have a dead vehicle that will one day soon visit the happy hunting ground. I would like to salvage the A/C compressor but I don't want to vent the freon into the atmosphere in the process.

Perhaps a dumb question, but is it worth it, or even possible, for anyone to bring equipment to reclaim the freon (134) free for the taking? Just investigating possibilities. Maybe I could put it in a balloon... :bah:

Good luck.

When I was trying to take a dead fridge to the junkyard, they wouldn't accept it without a certificate stating the coolant had been environmentally evacuated. I must have called about 50 different places in town trying to find someone to do it and everyone acted like I was insane. I ended up taking it to borg and getting like $15 for it and they couldn't have cared less about any certificates. the funny thing is that the compressor and the coil and all parts were already taken out, it had been used as just a shell for storage for over 20 years.

Anyway... good luck. I doubt you'll find anywhere.

the old freon is worthless and turning in freon costs money. Doing the right thing is great but it will probably cost ya. Call your mechanic and see if he would do it reasonably. If he services air conditioning then he is supposed to have a the equipment to recover

Call me a skeptic, I never bought in to the ozone hole thing.
They found the hole when they started looking, no record before that.
If you need to get it pumped out, any place that services A/C should do it. They get to keep the freon, I hope they do it for free.

No way, not strong enough. Get condoms, extra large, not the ones you have at home. They are strong, use them, tie them with a string and take all three thousands of them to the shop and give them to the mechanic for free. Explain to him that the condoms were brand new never used.
