To add insult to injury, I've heard of families that leave a guard at the home of the dear departed not only because of common everyday criminals but also because of common cur thieves within the family.
Your correct. When my aunt passed back in the 70’s, her out of town sisters raided the jewelry vs attending the funeral.

My Mom's Brother was absent for their father's funeral,,,
He was too busy looting the barn for tools and anything he could sell.

He was absolutely dumbfounded when they called the county sheriff on him,,,
The three surviving children refused to drop the charges against him,,,
If I recall correctly he did 3 months in county lock-up.

He was truly an arse-hole and deserved it.
