My wife worked about 30 years, but never 10 consecutive years, till RA got so bad she could no longer work. She can't draw disability due to the 10 year deal. If we divorced she could get SSI.

As a self employed person the last almost 25 years I may have been paying higher percentages in to my Social Security and Medicare via my self employment taxes than persons employed by someone else paying theirs in via FICA. Hypothetically speaking, at 45 yrs old, if I had a disability and needed to file for SS would I need to prove that I cant do the work that Ive done the last 25 years in my two occupation(s), or just not be able to do any type of work? Just curious.

Thats just it , they will try to rehab you ....to find Anything you can do for income.

Thats why getting a Good Doc's opinion in your favor ( or two) is very important.

Some Doc's can word it so there is No chance of denial, then ,of course, the "disability".

Some diagnosis is instantly accepted, and it helps if the Doc can word it ...correctly.

so, the answer to your question is...it depends...8)

I hadn't paid anything into SS in 25 yrs (Govt worker) but retired on disability and applied for SS disability in order to get on medicare. I was immediately approved. (if they'd have had to send me checks I'd still be waiting)

Negative. She only needs 40 credits. 20 of which must have been earned in the last 10 years. They do not have to be consecutive. Go quickly and consult an attorney that specializes in Social Security. Ramona Hanson takes cases from all over the State of Oklahoma. No cost to ask her for an opinion.

The number of work credits needed for disability benefits depends on your age when you become disabled. Generally you need 40 credits, 20 of which were earned in the last 10 years ending with the year you become disabled. However, younger workers may qualify with fewer credits.

http://www.ssa.gov/retire2/credits3.htm

•Age 31 or older--In general, you need to have the number of work credits shown in the chart below.

Unless you are blind, you must have earned at least 20 of the credits in the 10 years immediately before you became disabled.

meh, I would be that guy caught lifting weights or golfing or something anyways and end up in the can for fraud. I have some arthritis that is getting worse in my hands. Genetic, my mother has it too and I remember my gramma having it. Over 25 years of holding the tattoo machine and 35 years of guitar playing with almost 30 of those professionally hasnt helped. But thats about it, I can still tattoo but my main hand goes numb after a few hours and even though Im left handed I am ambidextrous and can use my other hand for a bit to give the other a rest, still, I cant just stop in the middle of a customers work if my hand goes numb so it pretty much ended me doing any work at it full time. Its actually just 2 of the middle fingers of my main hand that are the problem, they go numb then theyre dead after a few hours. So I just quit working in the booth some years ago and went over to managing our 2 shops and we've actually made better money with me out of the booth by hiring some great artists. My regular 6 month health checkups are a joke anyways for my size and age- low blood pressure (it gets too low some times so I have to take medication for that), low cholesterol, good strong heart (thats what ya get for not ever smoking and drinking lots of water and taking yer vitamens kids...), one bad knee, have some extra LBs but Im still in pretty good shape for my age and still lifting heavy weights and still boxing regularly.

LOL yea , your probably alright for a few years.

Sucks about the numbness in your hand, tattooing is an art, and usually people who do it Really enjoy it.

Sounds like maybe a pinched nerve , ever try chiro ?

Arthur is usually a constant dull or aching, with more pain as used, it is for me any way.

Doc said when I get ready, mine is a sure diagnosis....I'm just not ready.

Although I'm doing work thats not near as strenuous...at least not physically...LOL..8)

This is indicitive of carpal tunnel syndrome. I had the same things happen in my left hand. I thought it was related to the failed cervical fusion in my neck. The pain management doctor sent me to the hand surgeon. He confirmed carpal tunnel syndrome. Had the surgery and it help a lot. Not 100% but a lot better then it was.

Its arthritis for sure. My 75 yr old mother has the knotted looking fingers at the end knuckles, my gramma did too but at 89 hers got way worse than my moms is, mine are starting to look it a lil on the end knuckles too. My mother was a banker so she was on the keys for about 50 years. Mine has been coming on about 20 years, uncomfortable for the past 10, getting worse the last 5. I used to come home after working a 12 hour day at the shop and either put my hands on ice like I did as a young boxer or what really felt good was to do a load of dishes- omg, that hot water feels good after a good soaking. Good thing is my other career as a musician the hand that the fingers go numb on is on my picking hand and my other fretting hand is still good to go so I can still play the really aggressive type of music I play- metaL- with no problems. I also can still draw and paint and do commercial types of art its just holding the tattoo machine for any length of time is out of the question, and since it has been my main occupation most of my adult life I just considered it a disability.
