The story seems plausible and scary for the investors, but you can't drill through tungsten .... just saying. Drill bit would go through gold like butter and wouldn't even leave a mark on tungsten.

A carbide drill sure will. It won't be like butter but tungsten can be machined.
I've often wondered why this type of thing wasn't more common.

Sure it can be "machined" - still, drill bit, as a tool in general, is not going to even leave a mark.
Or is it? If you got $18k to lay around in a form of metal bar - does it really matter what it's made out of?
you would have to be on the ball to check water displacement....and you would have to either have another gold bar on know the displacement of an identical bar.
