The link below is to a great book about a kid growing up hunting back in the 60s in East Texas. It was a great story, a lot of it is influenced by faith based morals, and it throws a massive curveball at the end of the story. I won’t ruin it for you. I would recommend it to anyone interested in hunting books, the title is, “The Squirrel Hunter.” A little heads up, it has a lot more depth to it other than squirrel hunting!

Since I’ve finished this one I’m looking for recommendations on other hunting books/stories! They don’t have to be faith based either, thanks yall.

No squirrels die in the story, do they? I wouldn't be able to take it if a squirrel dies. I mean, they may be dirty, nasty, vicious, biting, rabies-infected, lice-ridden, rat-like furballs of death and destruction, but they're SO CUTE!! :rollingla

Dad had open-heart surgery in 1991 - he was laid up for quite a while. I bought him a collection of McManus' stories.
Dad enjoyed them, but got to laughing so hard sometimes it about killed him.
Haven't read any McManus in years, but I read nearly all his books a long time ago. I got hooked when I got "They Shoot Canoes, Don't They" for Christmas around the same time you bought that stuff for your dad. I would have only been about 10, but I thought the book was hilarious.

Anything by Patrick McManus

Beat me to it.

I had every book he wrote. I would get to laughing so hard, I couldn't breathe.
Grandkids would gather around, asking me to read to them. The house was filled with laughter.
As they got into their teens, they would come get a book when school required reading and a book report. A few book reports and teachers started wanting to read them and listed the titles on recommended reading. The books were passed around many times. Finally, being donated to our public library. Well worn and read, some of my favorite stories, ever. I may need to revisit them.
A major surprise to his stories, my best friend, hunting and fishing buddy, is a Crabtree. He almost fell out of a treestand, laughing while reading of the escapades.

Highly recommended to everyone, regardless of age.
