I traded for one of these a couple of days ago, mostly for my grandsons to shoot.
What do I need to know about them, good, bad. Are they picky about ammo?
Took the boys out, shot it, they loved it, I think it is a neat little gun but it know nothing about them.
Your input would be most appreciated.
thanks

I bought one when they first came out. It was fun and not too picky on ammo. The downside was taking it apart to clean it and the quality of it. If I remember right the extractor was riveted to the pot metal bolt and was loose when new. I traded it and got a S&W M&P AR-15 .22 for a semiauto fun gun.

I had a GSG 5, 1st Generation. It was a fun plinker and was pretty darn accurate. I had a red dot on it and could make a tin can dance. Had no feeding problems at all. Mine, being the early edition, had the weak extractor (although I never had any problem with it) and I sent it back to ATI for preventative maintenance. They replace the extractor. If memory recalls correctly, the old brad that held the extractor in place was aluminum and the new one is brass.

Most of what I've heard about them has been negative. Poor quality, reliability and prone to breakage, however, I've heard some owners say they were very happy with theirs. I will say the Walther/HK model is a much better version of that style of gun so if you should have issues with it and like the gun you can get a Hk but as long as it's working well just shoot it and have fun, it may last for years.

I have the Walther/HK version and its the most accurate .22 I have, or close to it. It's much heavier than the GSG from what I've been told by owners of them. Mine is crazy fun so imagine the GSG is just as fun. Find which ammo works best and shoot the heck out of it, they are a ton of fun.

I have a few. Absolutely love them. First gen and pre-lawsuit second gen. Not picky on ammo. Very accurate. A fun little plinker. Rifle version is my fav, but my cousins suppressed/pistol turned sbr is ferociously entertaining. They suck to clean, but I've never had a problem running 5k rounds between cleanings. While its no 10-22, it's a great little piece of awesome. Congrats on the new trade!

I have had issues with mine with regards to stripped screw threads and heads. It also will burst fire if the firing pin assembly is not cleaned after a few thousand rounds. Now that I have changed out the screws, added the collapsible stock and put a real MP5 foregrip on it....it's the most fun you can have with a .22 rifle at the range. Having a giant scope on top makes it look and feel amazing. I may not be able to reliably hit a plate at 300 yards like my 10-22 but it has a cool factor that I don't have in any other weapon. Just get the original, not the post lawsuit version.

Thanks so much for all the response.
What I am hearing{please correct me if I am wrong} is they dont compare with 10/22's.
I have several 10/22's in different configurations and love them. I basically got the GSG because I thought it looked cool and the boys would
be excited about that aspect.
What I dont want to do is to negate the good marksmanship training I have given them. They are both good shots as a rule but I dont want
them to form bad habits with the GSG putting lots of ammo downrange and become less consistent with their ability to put the rounds in the
8, 9, and 10 rings.
Please give me the counsel that I need if that is likely to be the result.
Thanks again and keep me straight.

Don't sweat it. The GSG is a fun gun. It is most happy when it is making a golf ball or can dance. But rest assured, it will also put holes in paper close to each other. All work and no play will make for dull boys.
