Handloading for the 1911

Jacketed:
Bullets - Montana Gold 200gr JFP - $150/1000 Montana Gold
Primers - Wolf LP - $26/1000 - Powder Valley
Powder - Hodgdon Titegroup - $16/1000 (buy a pound, but it will do ~1500) - Grafs
Brass - PMC Once Fired - $70/1000 (but can be reloaded several times) - Once Fired Brass

Total: $150+$26+$16+70 = $262 + reusable brass, plus extra powder.

Not counting the brass and figuring about 120.00 for store bought bullets I figure around 165.00/1000, since I cast my own from scrounged material my cost goes way down to about 50.00/1000. Thats figuring 35.00/1000 for primers, 10.00 for half a pound of powder and 120.00 for bullets and allowing a little for bullet lube. I usually get 8-10 reloads per case so if you want to factor that in use about .8 cents per case if bought from Gunbroker. If you shoot a lot it don't take long to pay for a reloader, The last one I bought I loaded enough in one afternoon to justify it.

My standard .45 acp load is
230gr LRN, Lyman's mold 452374 cast from wheel weight alloy sized to .452 lubed with Lyman Super Moly lube
5.5 gr Unique
CCI 300 primer
Case is what ever comes up when I grab one out of the bucket.

I use 4.7gr of HP38 in a 185gr JHP. may test it up to 5.0 but this works for now.

Primers: $30
Powder: $9-10 (using my Solo1000 powder charge of 4.5gr)
Cases: $50-70
Bullets: $70 for lead, $100 for moly coated, $120-150 for FMJ

Using the highest cost the totals are:

Lead bullets: $180
Moly bullets: $210
FMJ's $230-260

And this is considering only one loading of your cases, with light target loading they will last until you lose them.

Where are you finding 45 for less than 300/K?

I'm not. The best I found was $350/1000. I guess I was going to the wrong sites for prices! I appreciate the info (from everybody). I'm definitely going to look into reloading again.

Thanks for all the great feedback. What about a source for inexpensive supplies? So far, buying local seems to be the best option.

My favorite for cast lead 200 grain is 5.0 grains of Unique. Great and inexpensive plinking.

J&K Bullet Casters in OKC for cast bullets, Berrys Manufacturing for Plated bullets, Powder Valley for powder and primers. The Wolf primers have been shipping pretty quickly and are pretty good.
