Hard to find info. One of the other articles said this:

Report: Detroit man accidentally shoots his foot aiming for a cockroach

Detroit Free Press
A Detroit man admits that he accidentally shot himself in the foot early Tuesday morning in the 18700 block of Albion Street.

But did it happen after aiming for a cockroach?

A report by WDIV-TV stated that the 50-year-old was attempting to kill the bug, throwing his shoe at it with the gun inside when it discharged.

Detroit police officials told the Free Press that they could not confirm if the accidental, non-fatal shooting was because of a bug, but said the man was in stable condition after he was taken to a hospital.

It is not the first time someone reportedly went to extreme measure to take out an insect.
Well, with the weight of the gun in addition to the weight of the shoe, additional kinetic energy is vastly improved resulting in more humane insect deaths without unnecessary suffering.
That’s my analysis of the situation.
