Which 357 would you prefer?
Depends on what you want to spend.
You can get a Rossi or Taurus for cheap and will be fine for a beside the chair gun.
Charter arms makes a good revolver that is not to much.
If you want to spend a little more, get a Ruger like the 100s, or 101s.
The S&W start around the same price and then go up from there.

For auto's a used Glock 22 would be good. They can be found online for $350-$375 easily. For revolver, S&W 10, 15, 19 or the like. Though if he's going to be a novice I wouldn't give him 357's, I'd give him 38 +P's. The combination of novices, follow up shots, and 357's never really pans out trust me.
