They won't while still connected to gfci. To test them take wires out of gfci outlet. There's something in those that keeps them from a true read that why when you check the hot wire to ground you get a reading I had the exact same thing this summer with mine for our pool. Replaced outlet and all is well. If the gfci trips alot they go bad quick.

Thanks!! Will try that as soon as I get off work tonight, oh and do 3 transfers...

that GFCI kicks off if i miss emptying the skimmer... LOL

Ive had my license for over a decade now and have never seen this. I asked around and no one Ive asked has seen this. I don't think your Lying or dumb I just think something is weird. My thinking is if the device is hooked up properly A GFCI just interrupts the circuit via a contactor when it see's 5ma of unbalanced "leaked" current. if there was something the sensing circuit in the GFi was doing that could mess with your meter it would be out of circuit the moment the outlet opened the circuit..... now if it was hooked up on the LOAD side of the device........ who knows? Ive never hooked one up that way it's a No No. Are you sure you were checking the Line side of the device? What kind of meter do you have? Do you remember the brand of GFI?

Very interesting

Any updates from the OP? If you end up with a GFI like nobuttbrian I'd like to crack it open and see whats going on.
