I have the opportunity to hunt hogs but dont want to spend too much on ammo as there are so many of them, could I get away with using 223/556 soft tips for hog hunting or should I bite the bullet and use 308?

Just know where to shoot them. Most people shoot them behind the shoulder, like you might on a deer, except for a hog it's a gut shot. Has to be shoulder or forward.

Any ammo sufficient to hunt deer with will work for pigs. Hornady, Speer, or Sierra Soft point Boat tails or flat base will work. Don't buy bullets designed for varmints.
What will work better is the Barnes and Hornady solid copper rounds that will expand, but are designed to have more penetration while retaining full weight.
