Let's see:

So to recap: Hamas will not give up it's weapons, but wants the borders reopened for ordinary Gazans weapons smugglers and suicide bombers. Seems legit! :rolleyes2

And Israel will continue to expand her borders and confine them to a refugee camp. Forcing them to rely on Israel for basic human needs. Thus continueing the perpetual cycle of violence.

Was part of it about keeping the Israelis from going nuke which could have likely started WWIII or at least cut off our Middle East oil and caused a major economic disaster?

Who did and didn't want to assist them?

On October 6, Secretary of State Kissinger convened the National Security Council's official crisis management group, the Washington Special Actions Group, which debated whether the U.S. should supply additional arms to Israel. High-ranking representatives of the Defense and State Departments opposed such a move. Kissinger was the sole dissenter; he said that if the U.S. refused aid, Israel would have little incentive to conform to American views in postwar diplomacy. Kissinger argued the sending of U.S. aid might cause Israel to moderate its territorial claims, but this thesis raised a protracted debate whether U.S. aid was likely to make it more accommodating or more intransigent toward the Arab world.[271]...

During the night of October 8–9, an alarmed Dayan told Meir that "this is the end of the third temple."[273] He was warning of Israel's impending total defeat, but "Temple" was also the code word for nuclear weapons.[274] Dayan again raised the nuclear topic in a cabinet meeting, warning that the country was approaching a point of "last resort".[276] That night Meir authorized the assembly of thirteen 20-kiloton-of-TNT (84 TJ) tactical atomic weapons for Jericho missiles at Sdot Micha Airbase, and F-4 aircraft at Tel Nof Airbase, for use against Syrian and Egyptian targets.[274] They would be used if absolutely necessary to prevent total defeat, but the preparation was done in an easily detectable way, likely as a signal to the United States.[276] Kissinger learned of the nuclear alert on the morning of October 9. That day, President Nixon ordered the commencement of Operation Nickel Grass, an American airlift to replace all of Israel's material losses.[277] Anecdotal evidence suggests that Kissinger told Sadat that the reason for the U.S. airlift was that the Israelis were close to "going nuclear".[274] European countries refused to allow U.S. airplanes carrying supplies for Israel to refuel at their bases, fearing an Arab oil embargo, with the exception of Portugal and the Netherlands. Portugal permitted the United States to use a leased base in Azores,[278] and the defence minister of the Netherlands, apparently acting without consulting his cabinet colleagues, secretly authorised the use of Dutch airfields.[279]...

That's a plausible theory but its also speculative.
We have the Nixon WH tapes and Kissinger's memoirs and I don't know of any evidence to support the idea that Nixon ordered the airlift out of fear that Israel was about to go nuclear.

We do know that the US went on DefCon 3 for a day and in the David Frost interviews Nixon claimed that we nearly went to war with the USSR.
Typical cold war pissing contest.

In the end it did cause a major economic disaster.
The oil embargo that kicked off nearly a decade of inflation.

Speculative and anecdotal yes, but apparently the USAF put some stock in it...

The first U.S. flights arrived on 14 October.[63] Israeli commandos flew to Fort Benning, Georgia to train with the new American TOW anti-tank missiles and return with a C-130 Hercules aircraft full of them in time for the decisive Golan battle. American commanders in Germany depleted their stocks of missiles, at that time only shared with the British and West Germans, and sent them forward to Israel.[64]

Thus started the subtle, opaque use of the Israeli bomb to ensure that the United States kept its pledge to maintain Israel's conventional weapons edge over its foes.[65] There is significant anecdotal evidence that Henry Kissinger told President of Egypt, Anwar Sadat, that the reason for the U.S. airlift was that the Israelis were close to “going nuclear.”[66]

And yes in retrospect it did cause an economic disaster of sorts, but it could have been much worse.

Heard the score is 11 hundred some Palestinians to 50 something Israelis today.
Israel blew up electric power source, so Gaza is now w/o power. Faux says Gaza only has power 3-4 hours a day anyway, so there.

I heard Hamas's legendary accuracy was responsible for the destruction of the power plant, which is located in Israel. And that the Israelis have fixed it, while under fire.
What?!? Why would Hamas/PA do stuff that is so counter productive to winning this battle? Why would they want the citizens of Gaza to be without power, to be used as human shields, etc.?

Gaza and the West Bank are being used to spark the larger conflict in support of the destruction of Israel. They were never the be all end all, but a catalyst to draw in the Islamic and world community against Israel.
