OKLAHOMA CITY — Evidence that an Oklahoma City pharmacist wounded himself with metal fragments will be allowed during his first-degree murder trial.

Jerome Ersland is charged in the May 2009 shooting death of a 16-year-old would-be robber. Prosecutors say Ersland faked a gunshot wound by inserting metal fragments into his arm in an effort to support his claim of self-defense in the shooting.

Ersland told The Oklahoman the allegation is "ridiculous." Prosecutors say the actions prove "a consciousness of guilt."

Prosecutors say Ersland was justified in shooting the teenager once and knocking him unconscious — but that he went too far when he shot the teen five more times as he lay on the pharmacy floor.

Trial is to begin May 16 in Oklahoma County District Court.
