JM Davis Auction Haul

Here’s what I got over the weekend to support the JM Davis Museum Foundation (and my gun addiction). In order of age...

1. 1840s Kentucky Rifle, manufacturer unknown, .38, fair condition. Anybody know if/how I can find out the history on this?



2. 1894 Springfield Model 1898, .30-40 Krag, excellent condition. I bid on this because it was pretty, but I didn’t even check what it’s chambered in; slight bummer.



3. 1940s Arisaka Type 99, 7.7mm, very good condition. I like to think a Marine brought this home after stopping a bayonet charge.



4. 1940s Remington 550-1, .22lr, very good condition. Looks like a fun and pretty gun.



There were thousands of guns, but my budget couldn’t be squeezed any tighter than this. What do you think of the haul?

Sadly, the arisaka has been sporterized, as a lot of them have been. Is the mum intact?

I’m not familiar with the term mum in this context. Shows how much I know about these things...

Yeah, that’s pretty rough. The 25% premium on the purchase price isn’t great either.

Is the Springfield not in 30-40?

It is. It was sold among several Springfield 1903s in .30-06 so I mistakenly thought this was too. My understanding is .30-40 is much more expensive to shoot. What’re your thoughts?

The Krag will cost more if you bought loaded ammo. It’s probably not like you’re going to shoot it a bunch but it’s a good time to get a press if you don’t load already. The mum is a flower crest on top of the receiver. Many were ground off
