I ran across this and had never heard of it. Thought some of you might find it interesting.

Interesting. If I remember correctly (its only been 60+ years) Mama used to keep her taters in ashes from the fireplace. She canned most of the maters, so I don't know id she ever tried this or not.

I wish I would have paid more attention when she was canning, but I had other things on my mind =)

One year I had a lot of green tomatoes just before an early freeze. Picked them, wrapped some of them in newspaper and put in a cardboard box in the garage. Forgot about them till I was looking for a certain size box to wrap a Christmas present. We had fried green tomatoes for New Years Day. Really good.

Yep, wish we had paid more attention to Grandmas and Great Grandmas ways of doing things. Thanks for posting

Have not tried this yet but have seen videos on YT. I do can a lot of tomatoes. Of course fresh is best but having your garden veggies canned is better because you control what goes in the jar!!
Also still eating taters from the garden but will run out shortly . Need to grow more next year.

I had green cherry tomatoes on the vine in the backyard and I let the vines crawl along the ground. They would get over 25 feet long.
In the winter they would no longer turn red and I piled all the tree leaves on top of them so I had a 2 foot stack of leaves I was going to let mulch down until spring.

Spring rolls around and I dig through the pile and I had dozens of red tomatoes ready to eat.

I like that ash idea.
I generate a lot of ashes.

I picked a peck of turning red today- got a but load of green ones I guess I'll pick and try and do something with them- I'm good with ab out one fried green tomato a year and chow chow never gets eat. My sister said put in a box with bananas and they will ripen - then make banana bread.
