I noticed on this last load that the agitator needed a nudge to start agitating. We wash light loads because we like our clothes dry the first time through, so putting too many items in there is not the issue.

I plan on taking a look at it sometime next week, but I'm not 100% sure what I will be looking at.

What are some things to look for? Especially easily overlooked stuff.

It's a mid-90's Whirlpool top load.

We washed a mop head one time and alot of the strings broke apart and got tangled under the agitator. It was bound up pretty badly. I'm sure this insn't what you are dealing with (mop strings) but maybe since the machine is 15 yrs old there might be hair, strings etc under the agitator and it has just finally started to slow down. I don't remember how I removed the agitator but I remember it wasn't exactly a delicate operation, in other words I had to get rough with it. Might be worth a shot to look under there.....

I wouldn't be surprised if that's what it is. (No, not a mop head, but a really frilly-seamed patchwork blanket that always leaves strings.)

So the question is, how many beers will I need?

ETA: And its just an educated guess on the age based on control style. The people who gave it to us weren't sure how old it was.

Yep! I agree! Check the base of the agitator. If that is fine, it may depend on the age of the machine.

I replaced a belt on a 10 year old kenmore and it is still working great to this day(5 years or so). Do you smell anything funny if it sticks? belt burning?

Nope. It kinda clicked rapidly, then as soon as I nudged it it went just fine. No sounds out of the ordinary after that, no noticeable change in resistance of manually turning (when empty, of course) from before the issue until now.
