Is lead more expensive than bulk steel nuts?

Lets take a look at some math on that.
I weighed a homemade 1/2 oz sinker and then a 1/2" X 13 nut. The nut was almost 1/2 ounce.
Close enough to call it 1/2 ounce.

Cheapest I found was about 8 cents each. You will need 16 ounces to make 1 lb or 32 of those nuts.
About $2.56 a pound .
That was based on 50 count bulk.

About 6.5 cents each if you get 500 of them. That is still over 2 bucks a pound.

So I would say steel nuts are more expensive.

Used spark plugs are a throw away item I would bet you could get hundreds of those for nothing.
A bit heavier and nice shape.

Walk the on ramps and off ramps especially the ones with rough roads and corners on them.
You can get many lead wheel weights there.
I kept myself my dad and his buddies stocked with lead weights.

You can make a simple sinker mold.

4x4 post or other wood you may have .. even a tree limb will work.
Make sure it is dry wood not soaking wet as the hot lead tinsel fairy will visit you if you
if you pour your hot lead into a wet hole.

Now just drill holes with a drill bit into the wood.
Take some copper wire or bailing wire and bend it into a U shape and insert it into the hole.
legs down and Rounded side up.
Pour the lead into the hole..
Let cool.
Pound the limb on the ground to release the lead sinkers.
Best to pound the end on a brick and have sinkers fall into the grass or dirt.. Not on concrete as that will
scuff the wire you need to attach the fishing line to.

Simple.
If you get a good piece of wood and it burns in right you can use it over and over.
I used one piece for over 20 years.
Had 2 rows of holes and made 20 sinkers at a time.

You can also use a paddle bit or a step bit.
I like to sand the holes smooth for easier release.
Paddle bit will leave a pointy piece of lead at the bottom and to eliminate that just put a screw into the hole.

Some of the best casting sinkers I have made were from used NO Good brass cases.
30-06 .308. 357.
Fill with lead and have the copper or steel wire in it before pouring so you can attach it to the fishing line.
Man you seem to be able to do anything! I love it! I can’t think that clear anymore to have ingenuity.

2-3 oz for below Kaw dam is what I use and usually 3 OZ below lock 16.
For snagging paddlefish.
If you get lead I have sinker molds 1/2 oz. 1 oz 2-3-4-5 ounce also.
You can melt and pour it here if you are not set up
Next time you want to come to Kaw, let me know. I might get you into an alternative place with some good spoonbill. I've broken a couple of surf rods there with some big fish trying to get them in.

LOL, I can help you out.
I'm probably different than some folks. If it's public waters, I'll help anybody out. That's what public waters are for.
I'll tell someone what rock that's 10 feet from a piece of driftwood to stand on that I did good on a day before and tell exactly what I used to catch them on.
Public waters are for all to enjoy. If a favorite spot is busy, I have others. No big deal.
That being said, the fishing in that spot may not produce the day one is there. Mother nature and lake levels may influence the bite on that particular day and days afterward.
Fishers may not have the right technique with the baits. Lots of variables in fishing.

I have probably 20-25 pounds of pure type lead I will sell to anyone who wants to make the trip for whatever the melt price is when you get here. You need the pure type stuff for pouring smaller things like crappie jig heads ect as it flows better. Have a roll of lead roofing flashing and a ingot that are pure and some other bank sinkers and other scrap.
\
Now this is the part of the post I write for you younger guys hoping to jog something loose in your noggin and why I will sell the lead so bear with me.

Medieval Kings used to have Alchemist's employed trying to turn lead in other metals into gold for obvious reasons. Of course it didn't work as they are different elements on the periodic table with different electron shells ect.

I have perfected the art of alchemy and can turn lead into gold. How You say? By selling you this lead. I have piles of aluminum, brass, copper and iron the same way. About twice a year I haul this junk in that I literally walk through life picking up stuff that other people throw away and haul it to scrap yards and sell it for whatever it brings I don't care. I sometimes spend about an hour or two of spare time cleaning this stuff up or stripping wire instead of watching television. I once had a horse trailer full of unstripped copper wire I saved.

I then go directly to the coin and pawn shops looking for deals on silver coins and bars they might have left a buck or two in and buy these. I may hold them a few years sometimes and when the Silver to gold ratio falls to around <40:1 or silver metal goes up I start selling these on online sites or numismatic dealers.

I then use this money and buy the very best mint state graded rare gold coins I can find, afford or like. I have now turned lead into gold, something even King's could never do. And, it cost me nothing but walking through this world picking up other peoples trash. I have only been doing this since 2001.

I am a member of National Coin Grading society NGC. I am number #55 out of 360 registered sets where you build out sets of mint condition coins in every date minted in just the gold $10 dollar Indian Eagles alone. I am number 29 on PCGS website. You can check the sites if you like. You will recognize my screen name.

I have 1.2 oz Mexican 50 Pesos, $20 St. Gaudens, 3$ Indian Princess coins, Viente Pesos and others too the same way. I could tell you how much some of these rare coins are now worth or what I actually paid but you might not believe it. They are in a safe deposit box. They cost absolutely NOTHING.

They are in a trust and given to my daughters when I am but a memory. I hope they are not dingbats and put them in the rarities auction houses instead of Fast Freddie's pawn shop but that will be on them.

So please stop on by, say hello, have a cup of coffee and buy my sinker lead. And if your young and have a place to store junk piles please think about what I just wrote. If you do this long enough you will have NO IDEA what this turns into. I don't want to hear how you don't have the money, I just told you how. And all your really do is walk through life and enjoy yourself.

Here is my garage right now. People always bringing me junk. Looks junky huh?

Au-Contraire El-Capitan this is my latest arrival of what I am currently working on. That greedy mealy mouth banker is always rubbing on these when I am not around. For some reason He has been really nice to me the last few years. He don't even make me wait for the board decision, just asks what do you need Mr. D. The creepy bastage would sell his Grandmother if there was 20 bucks in it..
