I know we have some legal people so hopefully someone can give me some information. I will be completing my bachelors in criminal justice in July and I am thinking of trying to get into law school after I am done. My question is what do most law firms look for with internships and how often are they actually paid interns?

Any information would be helpful. Thanks.

Most firms do not hire students until after they have finished their first year. The Oklahoma County DA's office pays interns, unless they have budget problems, but you have to have your intern license, which means sometime after your first semester, second year.

The Court of Criminal appeals offers some positons, but budget cuts have made them few and far between (I can give more info on this if you are interested - pm me). Most positons now are unpaid externships for class credit through OU or OCU.

When I was in Law School the placement offices catered to the top 10%. Hopefully that has changed. Study your a** off and get in the top 10%. then you will be okay.

I wasn't anywhere close to the top 10%, and I am certain I make more than any of my classmates and probably have since the first year we were out.

I've done damn well at this profession, and if you were my kid, I'd say go do something else.

There are businessmen in every profession. You, sir, are not just a lawyer but also a businessman.

I have worked for some very astute businessmen with law degrees who couldn't lawyer their way out of a paper bag with the end left open. I have also worked from some brilliant attorneys who were literally living paycheck to paycheck.

And although I am not a lawyer I tend to go with the "go do something else" advice also.

Law degrees are good for so much more than lawyering. I worked with a kid at OTC who failed the bar exam his first time. Boeing picked him up doing some technical research and writing. Last time I talked to him he still hadn't sat for his bar again ... My gosh, why should he? He was making 3 times the money his classmates were as junior associates at a couple of the biggest firms here in the city.
