I have a 6X24X50mm Nikon Monarch on one of my .243WSSM's.
It's overkill, but was sure nice today looking at a buck 1/2 mile away and getting good detail on it.
For what you're asking the optic to do, I'd probably go with a quality 4.5-14X. Try to find one with very fine reticle subtension at the crosshairs. Bullet drop compensation/ranging would be another nice feature, but obviously that would have to match your preferred load.
I've got a Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14x42mm with Ballistic Plex reticle that I really like. But I have it on my Savage FV-SR and the BDC works really well with .22 subs out to 75 yards.
