I guy I used to work with told me that the few M14s his squad had in VN saved them from being killed when most of the M16 were jamming. I had a M1a and found nothing wrong with it except they are hard on brass. If you reload for it, you trash the brass after 3 reloads. I had some separate just above the base. I know this isn't an issue in combat.

In `76 we still had a few of `em in our company armory but as far as I remember they were never checked out to the range...

Yep...same here. We had several in the armory when I was at Buckley from 92-94 timeframe. Never shot them but we had all the parts to maintain and even rebuild them.

The M14 is a really good rifle and would have been a superior battle rifle in 1940. In my opinion, it is better than the beloved M1 Garand.

Growing up in the early 60’s, my favorite toy rifle was my M14 (followed by my Thompson). Could not get the M14 but I do love my M1A Scout.

Is it a good or bad “battle rifle” today, I don’t know. But it is a lot of fun to shoot.
