It says 30 Cal M1 on the receiver. I believe that is 30.06 and it looks to long to be a BM-59. I would be willing to bet it is an M-1 converted to use BAR mags.

Yes, back in Shotgun News days (80's maybe?), I recall conversions on M1's to accept BAR mags? Mags were cheap too, even for the times, IIRC, $5 at Numrich.
I always wanted one along with BAR gunner's belt (holds 12- 20rd. mags) but the cards never fell right. Heavy yes but packs a wallop.
In Stevens M14 book, I believe in the chapter "M1 Learns to Rock and Roll" it mentions this conversion and problems associated. IIRC, it worked ok in semi but not full. Hence the shorter but comparable T-65, later the 308 Win.
