I continue to be amazed at the vehemence with which people jump on this common confusion.

Why don't people get keyboard whipped as much when they identify a revolver as a pistol when everyone knows that's wrong? I am sure there are other examples of common errors, but I know of nothing that brings out criticism as much as when somebody calls a magazine a clip.

Maybe this misquote applies: "A little knowledge is an annoying thing."

Your thoughts?

You know, I was thinking about this exact thing today when I was at the gun show and this huge booth full of 1000's of magazines had a huge sign hanging above the place that said "CLIPS". I got a real LOL of it.

There are plenty of WWII veterans who call a magazine a clip. They just don't know any better, I guess.
Another confusion from my own youth is the use of the word automatic. A bunch of people would call an autoloader an automatic, and call a machine gun a "full" automatic. People like that oughta be horse whipped. John Moses Browning himself invented a pistol to fire a cartridge called the .45 Automatic Colt Pistol. Exsqueeze me Johnny, you dumb bastard, that should be .45 Semi-Automatic Colt Pistol.
