If anyone in Tulsa wants to look at a few, I have the trapper set, a pro skinner, and an elk. I won't be back until week after next but you'll be able to see how sharp they are after skinning some animals.

The three that dcmtex has are his most popular. 1. Elk 2. trapper set 3. proskinner. That trapper set will be my next purchase from Dave. What was really impressive is when he shaved a letter off a piece of paper and didn't go through it.

His knives are stupidly sharp! I went hog hunting with him in '94 and we dressed out several wild hogs and the knife was like a magic wand and never dulled.

My roommate actually has one of the "boner" models (I know go ahead and make jokes, couldn't come up with a better way to word it). It is awesome and incredibly sharp. He received it as a work christmas present and actually works with gerald porter (the guy who makes the sheaths) and they are some very nice looking sheaths in my opinion. He is supposed to be making my roommate a holster in the near future and I plan on having him make one for my J frame whenever he gets some free time.

Deer Slayer says that he uses ATS34 exclusively and won't consider anything else, which is of course a stainless steel. But man, if he can get a knife that hard and sharp, I'd love to know what would happen if he put that hardness and edge on an O1 or D2 tool steel, or even a premium stainless like S30V - instead of 3 elephants, it could do 6 before needing sharpening! With S30V, they'd be a lot more expensive, but with a tool steel, I don't think they would - they just wouldn't be as corrosion resistant. It also may not be possible to get S30V that sharp - not sure. D2 has a lot of chromium so it's *almost* a stainless steel, but has significantly-superior edge-retention qualities than ats34. But it won't take a high polish and give you that hunter bling bling in your sheath.

I really want one of these - you sacrifice some toughness to get that extreme level of hardness, but that's fine, because that's not what they're for (hard use) - they're for skinning/butchering, where you want the hardness / edge-holding ability above all else. I'll have to talk the man and see if a tool steel is doable. If you wipe them after use and put a little oil on, you don't really need the stainless steel.

Man, I *must* have the "Boner" - that's just too good. :)

I just picked up my knives this morning! Order placed on Monday evening, and finished on Friday morning. Not to shabby. The knives are BEA-utiful as well as the sheaths! The one on the left is mine and the right one is my dads.
