Lots have mentioned this about adding dependents. Not in my experience.
Maybe I've been lucky but the 3 firms I've worked for in the past 25 years adding the wife never cost more than 1/2 again as much as the base premium and adding kids was almost nothing.
For example at my current employer it's something like $80 a paycheck for me, an extra $30 for the wife and another $20 for any number of kids so max is around $130 or so. That's pretty typical for every place I've worked.
Then again 2 of the 3 have been Fortune 100 companies and the other a Fortune 500 company. That may be the difference as I imagine the more employees covered the cheaper the premiums.
ASIDE: HR is being really cagey when asked about premium increases in Jan. Meeting the new healthcare insurance mandates is expensive.
