You mean like let the Shah be pushed out of Iran, botch the rescue of American hostages from Tehran, Give the Panama Canal back to Panama and now the Chi Coms run it . Created Department of Education, worsened the energy crisis of the 70's ... I know I am missing a few things but his time in office was not a great time for America .

Inflation and double digit interest for mortgages.

As far the Dept of Education, if it was run correctly, nationwide all schools would be on the same page.

Example, in 1978 we moved from CT to CA. I had ended the 6th grade in CT, started the 7th grade in CA. The books I was given in CA, I had already had in the 5th grade in CT. I was set back 2 years.

We then moved to OK in November of 1979, middle of my 8th grade year. We moved to Tupelo. I had to play catch up in Oklahoma from the 2 years I was set back in CA.

If the Dept of Education was run correctly nation wide, that would never have happened, I would have went from one to school to another and transitioned to the new school seamlessly.

Now thats my experience, your may be different.

I agree with others' statement that I disagree with most of Carter's political positions, but I believe that Carter was a good man, and deserves respect for his service. I think we all owe him thanks, as he was the perfect President to be in charge during the Three Mile Island incident. Many people don't know that Carter was a nuclear engineer in the Navy, and probably our most intelligent president. Carter is probably the only president who could have had any understanding of what was going on inside the reactor. I've read, but not substantiated, that Carter corrected erroneous calculations of the experts, which led to the solution that allowed the reactor to be brought under control. Most people also don't realize that the reactor core was within a few hours of melting through the bottom of the containment vessel. Had that happened, the entire Eastern seaboard would have been irradiated and large areas rendered uninhabitable. On second thought, that would probably have been an improvement. Anyway, I salute Jimmy Carter for his service to the nation, and will pray for him.

The problem is that was actually NOT the point or purpose behind the Department of Education .. it was a knee jerk reaction / collateral damage from the civil rights movement and accusations that states were still preventing access for students of color after the 1964 civil rights act. Dept of Ed was an attempt to force accessibility and it ended up lowering standards so badly that we went from being one of the nations with the best education systems to one of the worst.

FWIW the Department of Ed just like the EPA didn't really start running things till after you were out of high school .

While not the point it should have been the focus.

Nope, that's why I said terrible president. Habitat for humanity was his pet project after office and seems overall positive.

Had the same experience moving from Alabama to Oklahoma the start of my junior year. Oklahoma school was 2 years behind. The only class I needed to graduate high school was Oklahoma history because it was a state requirement. All I needed was Ok history and pass 2 electives in my junior year to have enough credits to graduate high school. I graduated a year early because of it.

I can remember as a young boy, the race between Carter and Ford, being my very first taste of politics.

I think I was 10 or 12 years old and we had a mock election at school. Carter won almost by a landslide, except for my vote and a couple of other guys.

The teacher asked who voted for Ford and the three of us raised our hands. The teacher asked me why I voted the way I did. I told her because my father said Carter is a no good sonovabitch.
I was the exact same. Was bussed to Creston hills off 23rd n lotte. Intergration plans...
