Dear Mr. Keef,
Thank you for your letter and for sharing your thoughts on gun control. I am grateful to hear from you, and I will work hard to be the representative that Oklahoma's Second District deserves.
Like many Oklahomans, I believe defending the Second Amendment is crucial to ensuring our rights and freedoms are protected. These rights are not only necessary for defending ourselves, but also the lives of our loved ones and personal property. As a father of three children, there is absolutely nothing I love more than hunting with my kids and spending time with them, and I absolutely believe every American has the constitutional right to own firearms for recreational and self-defense purposes. America's founders understood the importance of protecting the people's rights to own firearms, and we should not allow that right to be taken away.
I will oppose any effort that restricts the Constitutional right of law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms, such as Senator Feinstein's (D-CA) proposed assault weapons ban, and Congresswomen Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY4) and Diana DeGette's (D-CO1) bill to ban clips with more than 10 rounds of ammunition. I am especially opposed to any efforts by President Obama and Vice President Biden to restrict guns through the use of executive orders, which is only a tactic to bypass Congress and force untested laws onto the American people.
We should remember that tragic deaths at the hands of criminals are not caused by firearms, but by the person using them. Instead of legislating away constitutional rights in search of a superficial cure, we should treat the real causes of firearm deaths, particularly by enforcing the laws already on the books.
I will continue to monitor this situation, and will be sure to keep your comments in mind. Again, thank you for contacting me on this very important issue. Please do not hesitate to write me again. God bless!
Sincerely,
Markwayne Mullin
Member of Congress

The thing that scares me is so many of our congressmen are willing to oppose restrictions and bans on the hardware, but not seeing a lot of commitment to oppose universal background checks. The UBC is the worst of all of these in the future implications it has in collecting data on all firearms and owners. It seems like the liberals are knowingly throwing out crazy restrictive bans on the hardware knowing many will focus on that and it probably won't pass, while letting UBC slip through the cracks. This and the un small arms treaty are the true threats to our rights.

We all need to ask them directly if they oppose the universal background check proposal. Put them on notice that this is a totally unacceptable measure that will lead to universal registration and then confiscation. They need to take a public position on this issue ahead of time and not be tempted to let it slide by as an acceptable or unavoidable compromise. They vote for it - we vote them out.

I wrote a note to my congressman explaining why UBC is a terrible idea. Many of them may not realize its repercussions. Perhaps all of us can write to our congressmen as well, and also mention when we call hem every week!

This is the gist of what I wrote. Please feel free to reuse.

Dear Rep XXX,
As an active voter and your constituent, I want to alert you to the hidden evil behind universal background check legislation.

While no one wants to sell firearms to criminals or the dangerously insane, Universal Background Checks are simply being proposed by the anti-2A crowd as a pathway to federal firearm registration which WILL lead to firearm confiscation and the end of our freedoms.

Think about how a federally mandated background check on ALL firearms will be implemented. Right now, only firearms sold through FFL dealers have to pass a background test, and in some states the state laws mandate that all transfers have to be through an FFL dealer. The feds regulate the FFL dealers and do not keep records of transactions, but the FFL dealers have to. If an FFL dealer goes out of business, those records go to ATF for storage, and are never lost. Now imagine extending this requirement to ALL buyers and sellers of firearms. Well this is impossible.

So the feds will say, well let us just require all states to do what California, for example, does already. All transfers including private sales must go through an FFL. But what to do about the millions of unregistered guns in the USA? How do the feds know who owns them? If they don't know who owns them, how will they verify that ALL guns are being sold after a background check? Well, the FEDs will come back and say: "We cannot implement your new law unless you allow us to register all firearms". So the inevitable next step to mandating background check on ALL firearm sales will be a demand to Congress that all firearms be registered, without which the law will be impossible to enforce.

Registration is a VERY bad idea. Registration will not prevent a crime since a legal gun may be stolen and used by a criminal (like in the Newtown case) and of course a criminal will never register an illegitimate gun they may already own.
So, the only reason for registration is keeping tabs on legal gun owners, and if needed, confiscation of firearms.

Since the 2A was written to provide a well regulated (trained) populace that could be stronger than any standing army that a tyrant could raise, the LAST thing the armed populace wants is for potential tyrants to know who has what firearm. That is why this insidious "background checks for all sales" bill MUST be resisted. it will open the door to registration in a year or two.

Please vote against Universal Background Checks. If the anti-2A crowd was serious about reducing gun violence, they would provide our schools with the tools they need to protect our children. Universal Background checks are simply being proposed as a pathway to creating a federal database of who owns what firearm (registration).

Sincerely
YYY

What gets me about this guys response is that he says he wants to protect our right to protect ourselves and for recreational shooting. But he doesn't even mention the real reason that the 2A is for. And this is the trend that I am seeing from congressmen and senators. None of them want to answer that question. The 2A isn't for hunting!! It is also not for recreational purposes! It is to protect against tyranny from our government. And anyone that is familiar with firearms doesn't call a magazine a clip. You should know the difference if you know anything about firearms. I just hope these people will actually do what they say they will nonetheless. We have a big fight on our hands. I just read that Feinstein is proposing her ban tomorrow. I hope it never even makes it to committee.

Just a small procedural note here, if I might; her bill will make it into the committee as part of the process. My hope is that it dies there, and I am fairly certain that it will.

I can only hope the Democrats remember 1994.

The UN Small Arms Treaty is really just a distraction unless you buy your arms internationally.

I agree. This one does not bother me so much.

Let's be aware that FUD is something we need to be working to dispel. The Federalist Papers Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/TheFederalistPapers?fref=ts) is a good place to go to see encouraging discussion of the founding principles of this country.
