I wanted to try my hand at making some single-stack mag holders for competition before I went out and dumped a bunch of cash on some.

We ordered three sheets of kydex and I built a template and a jig to form it correctly.

Here's the result;

I can make about six holders per 12"x12" sheet of kydex. I could probably get seven and maybe eight if I'm careful about my cut lines.
Now that the jig is setup and I'm comfortable with the heat and form process, it take about 20-25 minutes to cut one out, finish the edges and form it.

I got the idea (and basic design) from another forum. I like it; it retains the mag very well and hooks onto the belt well. The little flare on the belt clip part angles the mag just enough to get around my love handle :D

Have you thought about flaring the mouth of the holster so that the mag is easy to insert, or do you find that you don't need to with re-insertion (Guessing of course, that the mags inserted will always be full of ammo)?

I thought about it, but it's pretty easy as-is.
Since I will only really worry about drawing them during a match quickly I didn't worry about it. The other mags stay where they fell from the pistol until the stage is complete. Then I have time to reload and restock the holders.

Range report!

Wall and I used the mag holders for the Duncan match yesterday and the mag holders worked great! I didn't have any issues at all. They held up perfectly. No retention problems and no belt loop issues at all.

I'm very happy with them. very little investment and a very sound return.
