If anyone else decides to undertake a similar project, the standard metal finish beginning in 1944, was a phosphate finish coated in Suncorite paint. Suncorite 259 can still be purchased today. This would be correct for 1944 and later production rifles as well as FTR'd (refurbished) rifles.
