If anyone else decides to undertake a similar project, the standard metal finish beginning in 1944, was a phosphate finish coated in Suncorite paint. Suncorite 259 can still be purchased today. This would be correct for 1944 and later production rifles as well as FTR'd (refurbished) rifles.

I completely reblued the bayonet and scabbard too. Left the bayonet in blue but sprayed alumahyde on the scabbard and locking bolt of the bayonet. Actually turned out great. Probably my favorite part.

Tell your buddy that he'll likely want to pick up an ejector screw. Looks like your's is missing in the photos above...unless that's it sitting in the wooden bowl.
