Nims is the feds attempt to get EMS, Fire, and LE all working on the same page with a common commander or group of commanders. I have been instructing it in our county for the last 4yrs.
It's basically a modification of what the U.S. Forest Service has used for the last 30yrs.
It gives a set chaion of command, but most important, a set chain of accountability. So that the commanders can't play the blame game.
The only big change I see in how things are done is: In the past there was a continuing fight about who was in charge. Now that they realise that they are accountable, and have to take responsibility for thier decisions, the fight is about who is NOT in charge.
It has very little bearing on the duties of a field operator. whether you are LE, EMS, Fire, or cross trained.
It is the only time that I know of that sh!* rolls up hill. Once the IC is set up and operating, then he is ultimately responsible for all that happens on scene.

There is nothing worse than being involved in a large scale fire and have no form of command structure.

Too bad it doesn't teach common sense!! A fire in a garbage dumpster thats been almost put out by the owner shouldn't warrant a response from 2 engines, 1 pumper, 1 tanker and 2 brush trucks all running code 3. Some who arrive after the others have cleared the scene. Or maybe volunteer fire depts don't use NIMS and ICS....

I have taken 100 200 800 and another ( i cant remember which) I have cheat sheets for them, I am super ADHD so sitting and reading that stuff.....nope not happening. Although I did finally read it and it makes almost no sense still, until you see how it works....then it makes a little sense.

Between EMSA and fire I got 300, 400, and 700. Hey, its better than nothing. Used to FD was the only one using it, at least the hospitals and PD have seen and heard of it.

Its not just for forrest fires anymore....

Or three alarm dumpster fires...!

Actually, NIMS and ICS have nothing to do with initial response. Once NIMS and ICS are in place, assets may be returned to station if not needed, or more requested, depending on the situation. I've been on a volunteer department for 11 years and yes, we do take NIMS and ICS.
