I always swore Ford hung the water pump from the hood with a piece of wire and shoved the engine through the bottom and built everything else around it. Fords have been that way for as long as I can remember.
1990 is not old enough and that late 80's through the 1990's emission crap is quite thick on those years.
I was talking with a friend yesterday and I helped him with his 1977TA he is putting Holley Sniper Fuel injection on.
What a mess of wires and a lot that are not used.
I told him old school you have maybe 6 wires to function all your start and run stuff.

Cars from the early 70's weren't much better with all the anti-smog junk, then they started using catalytic converters.
Back in the day we would build magneto-ignition Harley scooters. IIRC it took 4 wires to run it all. Headlamp, tail lamp, ignition, all of it - 4 wires.
No starter, of course...
