Just curious... saw one in the Classifieds.
If you're building an upper, and you don't wanna do a pistol (which I don't care for), or go to the trouble of an SBR, what exactly is the point of a short barrel (like a 10.5") with a long flash hider? Like a 5.5" or something? I guess I DO understand the 14.5" + 1.5" pinned and welded - to get to just at the legal limit. If I put a 16" barrel and a 1.5-2" flash hider, I'm extending beyond where I am required to, yes.
But... if you use a 5" flash hider, you're not saving any on length, you've got a bunch of non-barrel length with no rifling, you're losing (potential) velocity, you're still at an overall 16" length... so what's the point? I mean, IS there any difference between say 10.5 + 5.5 and 14.5 + 1.5? Or is it just a matter of doing it differently without any real effect on performance? DOES it affect performance? I'd guess with 5" less rifling (than a regular 16" barrel), you might lose a couple hundred FPS, perhaps, but to most of us, that isn't a big deal... I don't think anyone's building a 10.5" barreled upper with a 5" flash hider trying to shoot out to 800 yards.
I'm just curious.
