Subject: Gun Control
It is reported that during a Wednesday hearing in Washington DC, Senator Feinstein of California stated two members of the Oklahoma Association of Chief's of Police were present.

Neither member spoke in favor of additional gun control in the form of Feinstein's "Assault Weapons Ban". By inference, some people have drawn the conclusion that OACP is in favor of Feinstein's legislation.
That is simply not true and the truth is as follows:

The vast majority of the membership of the OACP favor strengthened firearms purchaser background checks, particularly adding Oklahoma mental health records to the federal system.

Additionally, a large majority of our members are NOT in favor of the banning of any firearms in Senator Feinstein's proposed legislation. We simply do not believe banning additional firearms will not significantly impact gun violence.

These two little statements tell me that we still have some Chief's to be concerned about. It doesn't say who or where they are, but they are not in 100% agreement.

How about a statement from the OACP?

Yep, I asked the same thing about the City of Norman, and got about the same answer you've been getting here.

Seems like if OKC and Norman would make it plainly clear on their websites, less conjecturing would have to take place on forums.

They're pretty clear on where they stand as far as cleaning up dog poop when you walk your dog.

We probably do.

However, chiefs put their underwear on the same way we do and come from the same places we do; Some have it together, some don't.

It's not something to concern yourself with in Oklahoma.

If I lived in Colorado, I'd be a little more worried.

I would disagree in that I would say it's not something to be imminently worried about in OK. "The price of liberty is eternal vigilance," and all.

I digress.

The point is that, like MB said, they are human just like us. As of now in OK, they are not our enemies. To keep things that way, we should take time to talk to them and hopefully educate them; not fling poo at them. That doesn't make friends.

Really? If there was nothing to be concerned about, why would the OACP even be releasing a statement? Why would two Oklahoma Police Chiefs make a trip to D.C. Supporting Feinstein?

My understanding is that the Spencer chief went with the intention of being part of a violence prevention conference that would also include Jim Inhofe.

Sounds reasonable to me.

He had no idea that what he was going to hear about was gun control and didn't have any idea that he would be used as an example of someone who is in favor of greater gun restrictions.

That appears to be his stand and the reason OACP decided to issue a statement so their position would not be misconstrued. I am not a member of OACP or a command staff member so I don't have any more direct access to their thought process than anyone else but as someone who has spent his life inside a political bureaucracy, I can easily see it occurring just as he says.

Either way, chiefs of police don't make laws; Legislators do. If there's someone to be concerned about, it's your representatives and our representatives appear to be in line with us.

Sorry, if NOBLE paid for his trip, as reported, that is a complete cop-out. NOBLE is one of the groups listed as being in support of Feinstein's bill. You don't get to take a groups money and then act surprised about the fallout.
