Folks the pro druggies are never going to convince the anti druggies and vice versa. I do have to say that comparing guns to drugs is a flawed argument. There is no amendment guaranteeing the right to bare arms with drug tracks.

guns weren't brought up as a comparison of rights. I used guns to counter an argument that was made based on an attempt to play on emotions.

The "have you ever seen the damage a drug user can do if they hit a family of 2.5 children with a dog, who were driving on their way to grandma's house for the holiday," scenario is too broad and mean to do nothing but elicit an overly-emotional response.

I used guns as an example because the anti-gun crowd have used the same argument to justify banning guns. Anything can be rationalized if it's "for the childrens."

As a comparison for this thread, guns are a bad example. As a counter to a the flawed argument, it is a great example.

Why are we giving felony convictions for possession of drug paraphernalia and drug residue?

And if they just give them "drug court", they have to go for tests 3 days a week and pay $200 each week. What non-addict can afford that cost and that much time off from work and still have a transportation? They set them up for failure.

I can personally vouch for the fact that they don't 'set them up for failure'. I know of several counties that only cost the offender $150 a month or less and make provisions for testing around people's work schedules...within reason. Not sure of the other counties, but one central OK county has a 76% success rate. That means 3 out of 4 people who start the 19 month program, finish it and move on. That's doesn't sound like setting up for failure to me.

They require them to work, give them counseling and give them every chance to succeed. The ones who fail usually set themselves up for failure buy not being able to follow simple rules like check in when you are supposed to, don't drink alcohol, don't do drugs, and get permission to leave the county. Better than jail, unless of course you want to play the victim and blame everyone else for your problems.

Regardless of whether or not drugs should be illegal, a good portion of the drug convictions and Drug Court sentences revolve around behavior associated with drug use, not just drug use or possession. DUI, property theft, domestic abuse etc...should they get off the hook just because 'drugs made me do it'?

Is she prison worthy because she was on drugs or because she killed my children? There is a major difference, you know.

Let's examine this sentence: I cant wait to see how your opinion changes if (God forbid) one of children or a family member gets shot by an irresponsible jackwad with a gun.

Now, do you ban guns because this may happen to you, or because it did happen to someone else?

To me the weapon is irrelevant. The act is what should be punished.

Nothing but lol from me bud. Its funny reading as people argue their stance on drugs.

That's too bad 'cuz when people throw out statements based on what I believe to be flawed reasoning, I often like to hear the rationale behind them.
Otherwise I am left exclusively with my *own* reasoning and stand little chance of learning anything...

BTW, this:
"Even if a person is addicted it was still a conscious choice at one point and time."
While I believe this to be factual in most cases, I think it is unfair and dangerous to lump the minority in with that group......and it happens all the time.

hmmm jail time for drugs is flawed reasoning??? I will remain flawed and my breath saved for another day.

I condone individual freedom rights up to the point that effects my or anyone else's right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
