Okay, guys. I'm in the market for another 1911. So far, I've owned 3 Kimbers (still have 2), a Colt Combat Elite (sold), and a Taurus 1911 (sold). My two Kimbers are a base model Custom II and a Stainless Pro Carry II. I like them pretty well, but can't say that I know enough about 1911's to judge good from bad. I haven't read any really bad things about Kimbers, but from some remarks, I can read between the lines that not everyone is a fan of the brand. I'm not a great shot and too old to become one. I'm not a collector, so I'm looking for a gun to shoot, not look at. I would like some honest opinions and suggestions from some of you guys that are in the know, especially those that work on 1911's. I don't want to start a brand bashing thread here. Just want some honest opinions and suggestions. Thanks

Springfield Range officer ($600-700), Springfield MC operator ($900-1000), Springfield TRP ($1100-1300), Les Baer TRS, Premier II ($1300-2200) Wilson CQB ($1900-2400), Springfield Pro ($2700-3000), Full custom ($2500-a mortgage on your house). In that order, can't go wrong.

Keep what you have and take a shooting class. After the shooting class with the Kimber, you'll have a better feel about what you like in terms of options after that.

I've had 2 Springfields, a Colt, a Kimber, and a Norinco. The Norinco was the only one that shot 100% reliably, the rest had to go back for work. The norinco shot as accurately as any of them except the Kimber. The Norinco was stolen and I sure miss it. Really like my Kimber, it is now the only 1911 I own. Shooting lessons never hurt.

Yep...I'd have to agree with this.

Just a thought, but maybe you might shoot better with a different caliber or a pistol with different characteristics than a .45? But if you're set on a .45 I sure understand that.

I've had Colt, S&W, and Springfield and like 'em. No problems. My son has had two Kimbers, one had problems w/ FTE. I have never owned a Kim , but think they are decent guns. I like the CDP's.

I'm really impressed with the Range Officer. I think it's about the best 1911 for the money right now. Mine shoots great. I like the Les Baer TRS or PMII better, and if you can afford the extra $ it's worth it. Those are my top picks, although there is nothing wrong with a Wilson, Nighthawk, Ed Brown, Springfield Custom, etc. although they will cost you more.

What he said. It's not going to do you much good if you don't know how to operate them. Once you've become more accustomed to shooting, it will be a whole lot easier to decide what works for you.
