It can be illegal when it becomes an "in-kind campaign contribution," which is the issue here. Had it been done ten years ago, when Trump wasn't even interested in politics, it'd be a non-event, at least before the law. During the election cycle, though, when the purpose appears to be to protect a candidate's reputation, it's a little different.

Such is the state of our election funding law.
So what about all of Hillary and Bill's corruption. We can put Trump on trial just as soon as they get their comeuppance. Make it a threefor! :thumb:

So as soon as you become a candidate you can’t do anything to protect your reputation. Mmmmkay.

get em all.
What we are witnessing is purely political theater: propaganda to help elect Democrats and their stealth allies.
The important question is whether it will work as they intend or will backfire on them by disgusting enough voters who can step away from the progressive movie far enough to smell the hypocrisy of politics.
Trump is far from perfect but he has the interests of the country first in his heart. His opponents have been flattered, influenced and/or outright bought off to work against the interest of the nation...call it enlightened moderation, global cooperation, going along to get along or whatever you wish to make the tainted feel good about themselves.

Funny, that doesn't sound like what I said.

Trump would have been entirely free to spend his own money. He could have taken other actions to discredit the story. What he can't do is accept an over-the-limit campaign contribution, whether in-cash or in-kind...and since it's coming out that he authorized the payoff, he doesn't get to claim innocent victim status.

But yes, when you choose to become a political candidate, you do give up a lot of privacy in favor of public scrutiny. That's a good thing.
