Water weighs about 8lbs a gallon×5=35lbs ish. Beans would weigh less. Somecallmemom is prolly right.

I wonder what the shelf life is? Ive ate some old beans but I doubt they was older than a couple of years.

Even if they have been stored incorrectly and become tough you can add some baking soda while they are cooking to soften them. BUT a little goes a long way ... you can turn your pot of beans into a pot of mush if you are not careful. An 1/8th to a 1/4th of a teaspoon will usually be enough ...
