Sen. Don Barrington (R-Lawton), the chairman of the Committee on Public Safety, has refused to allow a hearing on the legalization of marijuana. His reasons are due to special interests like district attorneys, and he has also stated that his church did not favor it.

Sen. Johnson replied to the latter reason stating that, “Apparently, this small microcosm of a congregation’s views are more important than the 71 percent of the people in the state who say they are ok with legalizing medical marijuana”

She went on to state, “The other piece he alluded to was ‘soft on crime’, meaning this is an election year, and he is not going to let anything be heard that could jeopardize people’s ability to be re-elected.”

Interestingly, Barrington also has a private prison in his district, and received over $9,000 in campaign contributions from the private prison industry.

To give you an idea of how out of touch Barrington is: A disabled woman, clearly suffering from chronic pain, was waiting in Senator Johnson’s office prior to our interview. She had just come from Barrington’s office to speak with him about the issue of medical marijuana, because it was something that would greatly benefit her.

During the interview, when we began to discuss Barrington, Johnson explained to Red Dirt Report that when the disabled woman brought up medicinal marijuana, Barrington reportedly asked, “Well, can a doctor not prescribe it to you?” He did not even realize that it was illegal for a doctor to prescribe it. That had not weighed into his mindset until she brought it to his attention.

Johnson stated that the ill-stricken woman “was actually encouraged that he listened to her. So if we can get more constituents doing what she did, coming out here putting a face to this movement, letting them know that everybody is not a pothead, there are legitimate needs out there. Veterans, children with Dravet Syndrome, people with cancer, glaucoma, PTSD, those are all valid uses for this medicine.”

my niece takes methotrexate. <-- click link for side effects

she's been taking the pill since october, and has just begun supplementing with an injection. she travels to shriners hospital in louisiana for treatment, and will be making a trip to st. jude's soon.

the financial burden is oberwhelming, not to mention the physical and emotional toll it takes on her and her family.

medicinal cannabis would at least help with pain management and loss of appetite, if not replace the chemo alltogether as treatment for her disease. but a plant that has been used for millennia is too dangerous for her, so she takes medication that may cause her skin to disintegrate.

http://www.normantranscript.com/new/x1783667790/Senator-announces-new-nonpartisan-alliance-to-reform-marijuana-policy-in-Oklahoma

Senator Connie Johnson and former State Rep. Porter Davis announced a new alliance Wednesday to reform marijuana policy in Oklahoma. Johnson, a Democrat, and Davis, a Republican, share a common interest in ending marijuana prohibition in the state for medicinal, decriminalization and industrial purposes.

Johnson said the alliance will work to reform marijuana policy through the legislative process as well as the initiative petition process if needs be.

“We are coming together to call on the legislators of both parties, and the Governor, to quit avoiding this issue for fear of not getting re-elected, to stop playing politics, and to act like the statesmen and women the people elected us to be. We simply want to have the conversation in order to provide factual information to every legislator and the Governor so they no longer only rely on erroneous information, or the 'Reefer Madness' propaganda used to justify criminalizing this beneficial plant,” Johnson said.

“We call on our representatives to act courageously on the truth and neither perpetuate, nor pander, to ignorance. They can analyze the facts and explain to their constituencies the reasoning behind their actions. Every day we fail to do the right thing, additional lives are needlessly destroyed by this insane policy,” said Davis.

“Legalization will mean a huge boost in agriculture in Oklahoma given that hemp is indigenous to the state and provisions regarding hemp cultivation in the recently approved Farm Bill. I plan to do everything possible to recruit and empower candidates to run against all incumbents who oppose this bill,” stated Davis.

Tell me more about this initiative petition.

If one gets started to put SB 902 and SB 2116 on the 2014 ballot, I pledge to donate $100 or personally collect 100 valid signatures(maybe both). Anybody else willing to match my pledge?

The gov makes a lot of money when they catch a kid with weed. Then the "rehab" place gets to make some money "treating" them. And the DA gets a cut and the probation folks get a cut all for about a year. It's a huge stupid scam.....and seriously the cops have nothing better to do....how many times has a cop stopped a real crime...I used to be one and know a lot of em....most have never stopped a real crime in progress...they are just lackeys for the gov....

do what Colorado and Washington state already did .. roadmap for all the legalize has already been laid out.
if the Feds remove Pot from Schedule 1 drugs .. legalization process by the states would only accelerate.
what's amazing ... there are still folks out there that think Pot is just as bad as heroin.
