I know that H110 or 296 likes to be compressed in .357 and .44 Mags, just wondering what would happen with a full case of either under a 140 grain round ball in .45-70? Incomplete burn due to lightweight bullet, or pieces of rifle and shooter scattered around the bench?

It's hard to tell but doesn't sound like a good idea at all. About a zillion variables particularly what strength action are you planning on launching them from.

If you want some rhino loads I'd stick with rifle powders suitable for the cartridge in good modern strong actioned guns. H110/296 is for magnum handguns that run lower pressures and have a lower powder volume to bore ratio.

I may be all wet but I wouldn't try it and I've been reloading for years.

I reload 45/70 and I use h110 for my magnum revolver loads. I wound definitely advise against trying what you’re mentioning. Seems like it could go kaboom. Even if it didn’t explode I don’t imagine it would be a good load.

I have used 2400 with cast lead in 45/70, but never anywhere near a full case

This is kinda what I was thinking. 2400 is a slow magnum powder itself. It's been years since I reloaded a .45-70 but was thinking the case would hold way more powder than would be safe it might be 100 grains for all I know.

Consult a reloading manual. Folks way smarter than any of us; with fancy equipment we could never dream of owning, have already done the work.
Follow the recipes and don't be one of "those guys" who tells the story of how he lost his fingers.

No need to worry, I’m not gonna try it. Just thinking out loud I reckon. My thoughts would be an incomplete burn, as I suspect that light round ball would move before full pressure could develop.

The photo is some TrailBoss and round ball loads. Haven’t had a chance to try them yet, too dang hot to go to the range.

I love trailboss for reduced 45/70 loads. So much safer than messing around with pistol powders in that giant case.
