I have one of those similar to that design that is well over 100 years old. It's attached to my shop building now and use it after having to do some major rebuilding.
Just below the N,S,E and W, the shaft was locked up by rust when I got it.
Cut it off there, and welded a new shaft to it with a rod that I dimpled on the lathe so a ball bearing could fit between the shaft and the rod. Used some grease used in the arctic for a lube and it's been running for almost 30 years now.
Take a pic of it tomorrow if I remember. LOL.
The paint is faded and it’s dreary out, but here it is.

Friend is a beekeeper. He was out the other day and identified three hives in different hollow trees so he set out a bee trap to capture a swarm hopefully. He puts hives out every place he knows someone has a big garden growing.
They get free honey and pollinators.
He’s really working hard to spread the bees out.
