So, I was helping my in-laws move into their new house and out of no where, my father in law hands me a gun bag and says "here your go, don't say anything to Freida (his wife)". I get it home and take peak...it's a Foremost Marlin 6660.

After a bit of searching, I guess it's the Marlin sold in JC Penny's. serial number starts with a 69, im guessing that indicates the year?

I haven't yet asked about the history of the gun..my guess it was his from when he was in his twenties or thirties. I had been looking at some pawn shops and there have been several model 60s for sale, but none in very good condition. Anyway, just thought I'd share my story and hopefully, some of you guys might be able to fill me in on these guns.

Interesting! I knew Sears, Montgomery Ward, Western Auto, and Otasco sold rebranded firearms but never knew JC Penney did. It looks to be in great shape. It's basically just a Marlin 60, which are great guns. Have fun with it!

Sounds like you had an awesome day. Any day you can add a new gun to your safe is a good day, "gifted" gun days are step above that for sure. Congrats.

Just don't shoot high velocity through it...FIL has several of these....awesome little guns and accurate as hell as are most Marlins, but high velocity rounds will break a plastic buffer and the gun wont cycle properly.

that gun is in amazing shape. If you can find some .22's I'd be out tomorrow to shoot it.

Thanks. I did manage to pick up about 3000 rounds of Federal Auto Match from Cabelas a couple weeks ago at a good price. Me and the boys should be set for this summer.

I'm still a firearms newb...what is considered to be high velocity? Is there a velocity threshold? I think most of my stuff is around 1200 fps.

From Wikipedia...

Subsonic, which also includes "target" or "match" loads, at nominal speeds below 1,100 ft/s (340 m/s).
Standard-velocity: 1,000–1,135 ft/s (300–346 m/s). Common velocities are around 1,125 ft/s (343 m/s).
High-velocity: 1,200–1,310 ft/s (370–400 m/s) per second.
Hyper-velocity, or Ultra-velocity: over 1,400 ft/s (430 m/s).

If its match I would think its OK....have fun!
