What's a good program to get rid of malware? I think I have a virus or malware that redirects my google and bing searches. Does it in firefox and IE. It's really pizzing me off and sometimes when it happens Microsoft Security Essentials will nab and quarantine something but it keeps coming back. It's never the same one either, it's always something different that MSSE nabs. Been happening about once a week or every 10 days.

Suggestions?

Note: My next PC is going to be a Mac but not right at this moment...

Why don't you just use system restore to roll it back to before you think you acquired the malware???

Why buy a mac? Windows can be as safe IMO... Oh well that is for another forum...

Windows has to be made safe and then has a certain level of upkeep to keep it that way. A mac by nature dose not need any "protection" unless you are doing something really dumb. My wife and I have had our macbooks for 4 years now and have yet to have any issue not related to my son tossing my wife's off the sofa and that is without any antivirus software. I'm not a windows hater I just would rather not use one as my primary computer to troll the net

We have to deal with this at work fairly often. The old school of thought was, "Well, if you'd just quit going to those porn sites" but we have people getting the fake AV crap from something as simple as Googling a topic.

We use a combination of things. Generally, I'll hit it with SuperAntiSpyware and follow up with another scanner like Spybot or Malwarebytes. MS's Security Essentials will often take out the crud too. ComboFix is used sometimes too for some of the nastier stuff.

Often times, the scanner will remove the offending garbage-ware but will damage the user's profile and hide items in the Start menu. Sometimes that gets a little dicey to repair but if you get it removed, go to Control Panel, Start Menu and Taskbar, and you can choose Restore Defaults there. That was from memory since I'm not on a Windows PC at the moment so I may have left a step out. Said it many times, I get paid to keep Windows machines running at work but I'm all Mac at home.

Also make sure that once you remove the crud, that IE is not trying to direct you to a proxy server. Check IE properties, Connection, LAN settings.
