(CNN) - Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will set aside proposed gun legislation on Thursday without a final vote following the defeat a day earlier of major provisions sought by President Barack Obama and Democrats in the aftermath of the Newtown school massacre, CNN has learned.

A Senate Democratic leadership aide said Reid can bring up the package of gun proposals again if circumstances change and he believes he has the votes for key provisions to pass, particularly a measure to expand background checks on gun buyers.

In a major defeat for supporters of tougher gun laws, the Senate on Wednesday defeated a compromise plan to expand background checks on firearms sales as well as a proposal to ban some semi-automatic firearms modeled after military assault weapons.

it's not about background checks, it's All about the paper trail. The mansion-toomy amendment could have passed if they didn't swear it's not going to lead to confiscation lists and had dropped the requirement to record the serial numbers on 4473's.

In other words, they're just waiting (dare I say hoping) for the next tragedy so they can bring it back to the table quicker and play on the emotions of ignorant people so they can chip away at our rights.

Exactly how I read it also.

They will take any expansion of background checks they can get because then they can claim they need more and more information to enforce those background checks until they eventually lead to registration.
