It's supposed to help reliability. Less moving parts around the cartridge is good.

I've seen that mod/theory before.
My Steel Challenge Mark IV Hunter still has it installed about 10K rounds later. Never had that to be an issue. I cringe when doing the RO duties seeing somebody rack the slide and assume a round made it to the chamber.
A lot of times they get a click and have to tap, rack to get a round in there.
Keeping a clean gun with lube eliminates any issue with the loaded chamber indicator.
Not necessary to remove it IMHO. But everybody has their own opinion.

Mine jams just like a Ruger with it so it hasn't helped any... at least every once in a while
