Back when I was in the energy business, one of our subsidiaries ran their operation out of Dead Horse, Alaska (250 miles inside the Bering Circle). The "hotel" @ base had racks of shotguns in the entryway. When I asked someone about it, they said in the winter the polar bears get hungry and come to raid the garbage. Since the garbage is secured, they lay in the snow and cover their noses with their paws. If you walk up on one, you are on the menu for lunch. Carry that shotgun.
