Safety turns down Jets to remain railroad conductor

anbcprofootballtalk.files.wordpress.com_2010_12_k_fitzhugh.jpg

The Jets called safety Keith Fitzhugh on Tuesday, wondering if he’d like a job. The Mississippi State graduate respectfully turned them down.

“I told them I’m very thankful for the opportunity,” Fitzhugh told Jenny Vrentas of the Newark Star-Ledger. “But right now, being that it would be for just a couple weeks, I feel that I’d rather stay with a secure company and job, somewhere I know I could have long-term employment.”

Fitzhugh, 24, has worked as a conductor for Norfolk Southern railroad since getting released by the Jets on September 4. He enjoys the job and more importantly is responsible for supporting his parents. His father is disabled and can’t work, so Fitzhugh made what must have been a tough decision to deny the Jets.

“Being unemployed is not a good feeling,” Fitzhugh said. “It’s a lonely feeling. I’d rather be somewhere safe and have a great foundation.”

The Jets plan to release receiver Laveranues Coles (again) to make room for a safety after reserve James Ihedigbo suffered a high ankle sprain. Fitzhugh won’t be the guy because he has more important things to worry about than the Jets’ playoff push.

He's a smart guy. Not suggesting he has a 'sure thing' with the railroad, but he is reading the tealeaves correctly when it looks like the NFL is gonna strike next season.

I think the league minimum is $355k per season, if he were to play the whole season. I guess knowing where your paycheck is coming after the next four games means something to this guy. You gotta respect his decision.

I totally agree. I would have told them $10 million.

I meant interesting like, how do you become a train driver. It was always my life's goal to be a train engineer. Stupid college tricked me.

Start in the railyard as a switchman. Then move your way up the ranks through conductor and then engineer. Railroad retirements are some fo the best available. They have the retirement system that .gov workers can only dream of.

It was always my life's goal to be a train engineer.

I was cat fishing from the bank across from Hwy 69 on Eufaula one day. A very creepy dude drove down to where I was (you couldn't see it from the road) and started talking about trains. His life goal was to drive a train.

"I always wanted to drive a train, man! Do you know how cool it would be to drive a train, man? They're so big, man!! Just look at those trains!"

For a good while I though my last words were gonna be "Yeah man, trains are pretty cool man." right before he brutally stabbed me to death with a piece of rebar while laughing. I think he must have been a burnout. He left without murdering me, so I was happy. This was back when I was an unarmed kid.

Was it you?
