A South Carolina kid named Thomas signed about the biggest bonus ever for the New York Yankees... back in the late 80's. He's broke today.

Walter Fridge Perry of the Chicago Bears was laying bricks in South Carolina last I read up about him.

This kid may have his head on straight... 1000's of guys have had a "cup of coffee" in pro sports... or stuck around as practice team fodder only to leave the leauge broke with no skills to fall back on.

Start in the railyard as a switchman. Then move your way up the ranks through conductor and then engineer. Railroad retirements are some fo the best available. They have the retirement system that .gov workers can only dream of.

That's what my dad did. Started with Rock Island in '66 as a switchman and ultimately retired as an engineer with UP. Railway work is not easy and it has its share of BS corporate politics. But it's good, honest work.

I think this story about Mr. Fitzhugh is impressive.

+1 and you know that his salary isn't too bad being a conductor at all. From what I understand it's a pretty solid gig. Says he actually graduated too, which says something even more about him. Not too many players end up with their degree out of college these days. Got his degree, got a solid gig, and isn't out chasing a quick buck in 4 weeks of play on the field.

I think he has his stuff together.
