SB775 is scheduled for a hearing in the Senate Public Safety Committee on 2/7 at 9:30 am in room 534A of the state capitol.

Text of Measure

This bill provides for a temporary (6 month) handgun license, issued by the county sheriff, for anyone who has completed the safety class, filled out the application for a handgun license and has been granted a VPO. If the person wishes to file for a handgun license the fee will be reduced to $25. If at any time the VPO becomes unenforceable, the temporary license becomes invalid.

For those persons granted a VPO, yes. The permit is only good for 6 months and if they want a real permit then they have to go through the standard wait that everyone else has to go through.

I guess I don't know what a VPO is. Maybe this bill isn't for average folks.

Amended version passed out of committee today. The amended version removed the reduced price of $25 for a license for someone who had a temporary license due to a VPO.

Keeping the requirement for the safety class still builds in a potentially-substantial waiting period. Anybody who has a VPO is likely to need the protection now.
