Didn't see this anywhere...if it is a repost, please delete.

(1) target was a conservative group
(2) occurred in a fiercely anti-gun area
(3) shooter supposedly had Chi-fil-a material in his backpack

A gunman who shot a security guard Wednesday at the Family Research Council office in Washington, D.C., was carrying a handgun and several additional rounds of ammunition, federal investigators told NBC News.

Washington, D.C., police say the man, in his late 20s, walked into the headquarters of the conservative Christian lobbying group around 10:45 a.m. When challenged by the security guard, the gunman shot the guard in the arm.

He was then detained by other guards, and both district police and the FBI responded. He was taken into custody by FBI agents. The FBI will have jurisdiction if the incident turns out to be a hate crime.

The suspect’s name has not been released, but two law enforcement officials told NBC News he is Floyd Corkins, 28, from nearby Herndon, Va.

Another official said the suspect bought the gun used in the shooting five days ago.

The FBI said the security guard is being treated in the hospital and "doing OK."

"The security guard, you know, was a hero in this case," Jacqueline Maguire, FBI Washington Field Office spokeswoman, said at a Wednesday afternoon briefing. "And he did an excellent job of stopping the gunman from getting any further into the building and from anyone else getting injured or shot by him."

Maguire said she could not go into details of the incident.

One law enforcement official told NBC News it's fairly clear the Family Research Council was the man's target, though the FBI has yet to specify either a motive or the target of the attack.

Federal officials said the suspect was carrying a backpack containing materials related to Chick-fil-A restaurants.

Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council sent an e-mail to members last month in support of comments by the restaurant chain's president, Dan Cathy, who criticized same-sex marriage.

The comments touched off a public clash. Supporters on "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day" on Aug. 1 flooded the chain's franchises around the country and was countered with "kiss-ins" by same-sex couples at assorted locations Aug. 3.

Two federal officials said the suspect appeared to be mentally disturbed.

In a statement, Family Research Council President Tony Perkins said, "The police are investigating this incident. Our first concern is with our colleague who was shot today. Our concern is for him and his family."

On its website, FRC, founded in 1983, says it advocates "faith, family and freedom in public policy and public opinion."

So did he have sandwich wrappers or what? I mean cold hearted killers need lunch too. My favorite line in the whole story. "two federal officials said the man appeared to be mentally disturbed". When was the last time anyone said "well he appears to be quite mentally stable" after a shooting?

It isn't news because it was a conservative christian group that was targeted.

I agree with this. Also, a good line in the story..."The suspect’s name has not been released, but two law enforcement officials told NBC News he is Floyd Corkins, 28, from nearby Herndon, Va." I think that means his name HAS been released! :uhwhat:

Doesn't seem to make much news here either.
If by ''here'' you mean OSA, it's made the usual amount.
It's been treated like news at least by ABC CNN and Fox. It's also been banner headline stuff on a long ton of news sites. BUT, "it's not making news because the target was a conservative Christian group." O.K.

I'm not sure how much more news it could have made considering that nobody was critically injured.

AND, what if it hadn't been targeted at a conservative group? What if People for Baby Killing and Gun Grabbing, had been targeted, and you saw it all over the TV and the Web? Well, then it would be "wow, so a guy got shot in the arm, isn't this coverage a little excessive?"

So whether or not it's news around here is mostly something we make up as we go along.

I think what they are complaining about is the double standard. If it had been a liberal group it would have been the huge news story of the day, if not for the week. Personally I thought it was reported more in line with how it should have been no matter which group was attacked.

The funny part, it is being reported that the shooter begged for mercy because he only tried to attack right wingers.
