While watching Pawn Stars Im noticing something odd as of late. People are coming and selling items left to them by their parents/grandparents or other family menber. Some of these things have been in the family for a long time. My question is why? I wouls never sell off something like that. Once its gone....its gone.I cant understand why someone for example would sell off their Grandfathers M-1 he carried in Europe...or his bomber jacket with all his bombing missions on it. I dont know seems like people just dont think long term anymore.

I agree, I have a 1911 that my grandfather carried in WWII and Korea. He paid a Korean guy a pack of smoke to nickle plate it for him. wouldn't sell it for the world. There have been a lot of stories about the items brought to Pawn Stars being staged by the producers.

I've never seen that show but re your question, when a person needs cash, they need cash.

Check out Maslow's "Hierarchy of Needs." Some things take priority over other things.

I visited my grandmother who lives in Tulsa (not the one I talked about in the pit bull thread) about a month ago and in her coat closet she had a bag full of old revolvers that she had accumulated from throughout her life. Some of them came from ex/deceased husbands or from when she was a single pistol packing honey. She said I could have the bag of 6 or so revolvers and I will forever keep them.

Then a couple weeks ago my grandpa gave me the old Remington that his dad and grandfather use to carry. I guess it is coming to the time in my life where the grandparents have to draw the lines in the sand and it sucks. No amount of pawn shop money is worth my family history.

Maslow's model was brilliantly simple, but I doubt hock shops were part of his pyramid. I tend to think most of these people are opportunists.

The people needing cash are more likely the ones selling TVs for 30 bucks on Hardcore Pawn so they can make their light bill this month.

Some heirlooms are passed on to the wrong person.

+1. When my Step-Grandfather(married my Grandma but only one I ever knew) passed away one of his real grandson's showed up at the funeral home and threw himself on the casket crying. I felt so bad that I went home and got the .22 Grandpa had learned to shoot with, and given me, and gave it to him. After the funeral I discovered what a shady character he was and the real reason he was never around. Wish someone would have told me earlier!
