Be careful: don't get ammo if you don't know what kind to buy.

I speak for all shooters when I say that if you give a shooter ammo for a gun he doesn't have, he will buy a gun chambered for it.

My wife and I laughed.

Magazines if you know specifically which gun. Grips if they have a gun that has replaceable grips. Cleaning tips/brushes wear out for guns that get shot/cleaned a lot. Pocket sized notepads and pens/pencils; I'm always looking for one. Multitools are great, even better are swiss army type tools with multiple tips; something that can be dropped in any range bag for that "murphy's law" adjustment that must be made on the range.

In all seriousness, many cleaning supplies are universal to all firearms. Hoppe's #9 is useful for lots of stuff (including whitening the toe caps on Chuck Taylors -- I've checked), and even if the recipient doesn't use it, they will probably use it as cologne.

There are some books you should consider that shouldn't run you too much. If your husband/brother-in-law hunt, get a collection of Gene Hill stories like this.

One of those .50 cal or 30 Cal writing pens, shooting glasses, electronic hearing protectors, call of duty game. Look at a cheaper than dirt or sportsman's guide catalog, you will get lots of ideas.
